Founder's Story
I grew up surrounded by the healing philosophy of Korean food and skincare, both of which are rooted in nourishment and balance. Ingredients like green tea, rice water, and omija were daily rituals that healed both body and skin. My parents came to the U.S. to give my sister and me the kind of opportunity they never had, leaving everything familiar behind to start anew. As I got older, I began to understand the quiet strength behind their sacrifices. My mom would drop me off at school in Santa Barbara, drive to Los Angeles for work, and return just in time to pick me up, never once showing how exhausted she must have been. Despite everything, she always cared for herself and our family. Her nightly skincare ritual was sacred; a small, steady act of self-respect and calm amid the chaos. Watching her taught me that beauty begins with resilience. That spirit inspired the name UNcommon. To me, it communicates individuality born from perseverance and the courage to unlearn perfection while embracing what sets us apart.
This project was born from more than just a deep love of my culture and its medicinal food. This is a part of my new chapter. There was a time I was stuck in an ocean of sadness, feeling that I had no control over my life and future. At my lowest, I made a choice to swim instead of sink, and that choice returned my power. I realized the light I was searching for wasn’t somewhere far away. It had always been inside me. I just had to choose to see it. I realized that light was stronger than doubt and brighter than fear. As I healed, I remembered the things I love, like creativity, entrepreneurship, and hard work.
So, I did two things to begin to build a life that would maintain my sense of purpose and independent power. I applied to law school, and I started my very own company. Both undertakings have culminated at the same moment, and as I write this on the eve of launch, I have just finished law school midterms.
Coming close to launch, I’ve been feeling so much gratitude. There are so many people I’ve met along the way who’ve taught me, inspired me, and shaped me into who I am today. Every interaction has been a lesson, and while I’m far from perfect, I’m learning every day how to be a better friend, daughter, CEO, and partner.
I count my blessings every day that I get to do something I love, something that feels like a reflection of everything and everyone who’s helped me get here.
Most of all, I’m endlessly grateful to my family. To my parents, who gave me the space and support to take a chance on this dream. I hope one day I can return even a fraction of the love and faith you’ve given me.
And to my friends, thank you for your patience, your understanding, and for believing in me through every late night, doubt, and detour.
Here’s to the beginning of something we built together, piece by piece. 🤍
